In order to achieve the full benefits, some plans involve one 24-hour fast one day a week.
This can be extremely difficult for beginners and people used to snacking during the day. Intermittent fasters do become somewhat accustomed to these fasts over time but they still remain a bit of a “dreaded day.”
However, a more sensible approach would be the 16:8 option where you will fast for 16 hours then have an 8 hour eating window. There are also other fasting options that you might find works best for you and your lifestyle.
Side effects. Mood swings, irritability, lethargy and of course hunger are the main side effects associated with intermittent fasting. Other symptoms may include headaches and brain fog.
However, most intermittent fasters report that these symptoms disappear as the body adapts to the fasting plan. If side effects continue for longer than a week or 10 days then intermittent fasting may not be for you.
Reduced Physical Activity. Relatively low energy levels are a notable side effect of intermittent fasting. This may be a problem for athletes who have daily practice, as well as for people whose jobs require a lot of physical activity, such as construction workers.
For most people, however, it’s easy to arrange to fast on days that require less physical activity and do strenuous exercise on non-fast days.
